Lahaul & Spiti - land of lamas OR little Tibet OR Country of the gods OR The Land of haunting and unforgettable beauty

These are two remote Hilamalyan valleys lying on the Indo-Tibet border. These valleys are in the rugged beauty of their rocky escapement and also snow covered peaks.

In Lahaul you will find uniformly high mountains, massive glaciers, lakes and gushing rivers. Lahaul is also famous for Buddhist art and culture. In Spiti you will find cold desert that is regarded as the "Palace where the gods live".

Both these places are well known for Monastries tourists come here to explore the rich repositories of ancient murals, wood carving, thangkas and the golden images of Padmasambhava.

Main Attractions of Lahaul and Spiti

Guru Ghantal Monastery : This is believed to be the oldest Gompa of Lahaul. This Gompa is in wooden structure with pyramidal roofs that preserves the idols of Padmasambhava and Brajeshwari devi.

Kye Monastery : This is the biggest and the oldest monasteries of Spiti that is decorated with beautiful paintings and scriptures of Lord Buddha and other goddesses.

Kunzum Pass : This is gateway to Spiti from Kulu and Lahaul. There is a temple dedicated to goddess Durga at the top of this Pass. Close to it there you will find a stunning Bara-Sigri glacier that is the second longest glacier in the world.

Tabo Monastery : This is a complex that can easily hold nine temples, 23 chortens that can easily accommodate more than 350 people.

Baralacha Pass : This is the famous Baralacha pass that is situated at an altitude of 16,400 ft above sea level. This pass is 8-km long where many roads meet each other.

Chandra Tal Lake : This is beautiful lake located at the source of the Chandra River in the Lahaul valley of Himachal Pradesh situated at an altitude of 15,500 ft above sea level. At this lake you will find melt-waters from the Chandra glaciers.
